Visit of a famous king
King Kesari is a big name in Indonesian history. Heir to the royal Syailendra dynasty that ruled Java and Bali for many years, he became famous as the mastermind behind Indonesia’s architectural wonder the Borobudur. As a young Budhist novice he visited Bali, here in Blanjong. The villagers built this temple in his memory, making it one of Bali’s most sacred places.
Mythical rock
Inside the temple you find the mythical rock Prasati Blanjong. This inscriped stone, dating back to the 10th century, is the islands foundation stone: ‘Walidwipa’ is old Balinese Sanskrit for Bali Island and ‘Singhadwara’ refers to Sanur.
Coral temple
Pura Blanjong is entirely made out of coral, no brick in sight. Also notice the exquisite ancient twin sitting calf statues, sadly from which both heads have been removed.
