Pak Kee is a local favourite, and it isn't difficult to see why: this little neighbourhood bakery's home-baked goodies are great value for money. A sausage bun only costs five dollars here. “Our motto is to bake the best bread and make our customers happy, not make a huge profit. Even people who have moved away still come here for their bread,” says Pak Kee.
Musical chairs
The bakery has moved around the city quite a few times. Business started all the way in the eastern part of Hong Kong Island, in Chai Wan. In the 1990s, the bakery moved to SYP: first, they set up shop on Centre Street before settling down here, on Third Street.
Mouth-watering must-tries
Pak Kee is an excellent place to enjoy the quintessential Hong Kong pineapple bun; however, absolute must-tries here are the cheesecake (芝士蛋糕) (HK$8) and chocolate lo mai chi (朱古力糯米糍), glutinous rice dumplings (HK$14 for 4 pieces)! Do you see the old-school bread slicer next to the cashier to slice freshly baked loaves? It's a rare find in the city these days.
