iShop Kankatori Gali

Ahmedabad’s wedding card street, a lover’s lane.

Our business does well here. The old city markets are very popular for wedding shopping, clothes, gifts, food, and hence the business of wedding invitation is a flourishing one

That great Indian wedding

The all-important element in Indian weddings is the invitation cards also known as kankotri, and this market is the place to find them! Mahurat Cards is one of those shops that has been around for generations. The owner, a young woman named Pooja shares: “Our shop has been running since the past 30 years. It was my mother’s idea. At the time she started this venture there were only five shops in this lane and today there are more than 50 shops. Our business does well here. The old city markets are very popular for wedding shopping, clothes, gifts, food, and hence the business of wedding invitation is a flourishing one.”

Girl power

In many Indian cities, managing a business has traditionally been perceived a ‘man’s job’. Ahmedabad may be a city strongly rooted in tradition, but as a trader’s town it is progressive at the same time. Pooja admits it’s tough at times, but overall positive: “My experience has been great for the most part. A handful of people have a tough time accepting a female head and try to be difficult, but mostly I have been respected and people are always happy to help”.
