iSurprise Kampung Wisata Ketandan

Village of heroes

Kampung of heroes

Surabaya still has many corners of the city that tick with stories of the past. One of them is Kampung Ketandan, an old village in the middle of the city that is also a testimony to the struggle for independence at that time. This kampung gave birth to many fighters and it is the place where many of them would hide and seek refuge in the battles. Known as the golden triangle, perched between four large roads - Jl. Tunjungan, Jl. Blauran, Jl. Praban and Jl. Embong Malang – Kampung Ketandan is like a labyrinth of small alleyways, it was a hiding place, a lifeline and a communication hub for the fighters.

Ketandan Village is one of the places where the heroes would hide. Hundreds of fighters would suddenly emerge from the kampung, taking the enemy by surprise.

Neighbourhood stories

Hidden behind skyscrapers, this is like a small village in the city that still has many typical houses in Javanese Dutch Betawi style dating back to the colonial period. Important placeholders in the neighbourhood are the An-Nur Mosque and the Tomb of Mbah Buyut Tondo, silent witnesses to the development of this unique place. The mural art depicts and celebrates the life of today’s heroes: the ordinary residents – from satay maker's to flower sellers - that make the neighbourhood tick.
