Traditional town planning

In the old days, every town followed the same strict rules: in the middle was the alun alun (public square), the heart of the city. Around it were the mosque (facing east, towards Mecca), the town hall and the market (pasar).

The alun alun has always been the heart of the city. After office hours and during weekends, this large AstroTurf field is the place to be. Locals come here to hang out and have fun. Recently revamped to accommodate the large number of pilgrims that arrive here every year.
