Last remains of Batavia walled city

Be quick to visit, the VOC warehouses are slated to be demolished to make way for new development

Batavia days

Tucked away behind a military truck park, you find these massive 18th century VOC warehouses. Known as the Oostzijdsche Pakhuizen is where the VOC kept its food supplies, like grain, rice, beans and ship biscuits.

Warehouses

After the VOC went bankrupt, the warehouses were used by the tramway company and in 1950 rented out to Chinese wholesalers from Glodok. These days, it is a cement factory, leaving the visitor in a sprinkle of dust. Be quick to visit, the VOC warehouses are slated to be demolished to make way for new development.

Nice to know

The original Batavia Castle (demolished after a large malaria plague) was about 30 meters north of these warehouses.
