Russian inspired art deco building filled with literary treasures

Eclectic architectural mix

You’re standing in front of one of the most significant historic buildings on Merchant Street. The ‘Paradise of Literature’ is a beautifully preserved example of the immediate post war period in Yangon. Designed by a Russian architect in an eclectic mix of architectural styles with monumental balconies, classic columns and art deco influences.

Paradise of Literature

The building is home to a popular public library and the Myanmar Translation Society. Plans exist to redevelop it into a true ‘Paradise of Literature’ keeping the library and complementing it with space for literature-related events, a coffee shop and a book store.

Nice to know
