iSee Cathedral of Christ

Main Anglican Cathedral where all Ceylon bishops are blessed

Church of Ceylon

An architectural masterpiece. Cathedral of Christ is not just another church, it’s the city’s Anglican Cathedral and seat of the Bishop of Colombo. The building is not that old. It dates back to the 1970’s and its design was inspired by the hexagonal shape of a traditional Buddhist temple. The simple and clean lines and unfinished earth walls make it a really intimate place of worship. Don’t miss the baptismal pool near the entrance which is used for adult immersion baptism.

Land of ants

Locally this place is known as Kumbi Kele (land of ants) because it was wild jungle out here before the church was built. The Vicar remembers: “When I came here as a child, there was a car repair yard where the government vehicles were fixed”. Even today, the church premises are lush and green. Have a stroll, the garden is lovely and the huge banyan tree is a popular place for bridal photoshoots.
