The history traces all the way back to 1828, to the early Muslim burials in the Happy Valley cemetery. The original small mosque was replaced with a bigger one after WWII, later demolished for the new flyovers leading to the Aberdeen Tunnel. In 1981, the mosque finally found a permanent home on a new lot given by the government.

Community hub

Designed by Chinese Muslim, Ramju Sadick, the eight-storey Islamic Centre is truly a neighbourhood hub that hosts a variety of facilities for the Muslim community, including the popular Islamic canteen, bakery, library, clinic, classrooms, offices of different Islamic NGOs. There’s even a kindergarten on the ground floor.

History of Muslims

There are over 300,000 Muslims in Hong Kong. The first Muslims came with the East India Company’s fleet from Calcutta and Bombay in 19th century. More followed their footsteps and many took on civil service postings such as policemen, prison guards, dockyard police and post office managers. Many merchants came as well, especially the diamond traders from South India.
