The village market, heart of the Chinese community

Heart of Taipa’s Chinese community

For the local Chinese community the old open air Carmo market square was Taipa’s heart, and still is an iconic landmark in old Taipa village. Even today this is the popular meeting point for many local villagers. You’ll find elderly from the local neighborhood chit chatting with friends in the pleasant shade of the pavilion.

Market days

The market was built in 1886 by the former colonial government as an open market for selling the freshest catch of the day, food and groceries and it was indeed a bustling market in those days.

A big shade place to have a rest and a clean public toilet.

Design detail

Look up to see the interesting blend of architecture in the design of the market; pillars in Greek-Roman classic style combined with Chinese roof tiles.
