Big license plate
Cheung Fat is one of the few remaining licensed dai pai dongs in town.Dai pai dong literally means ‘restaurant with a big license plate’, after the size of the license, which is bigger than that of other licensed street vendors.Just after the war, these licences were widely distributed by the Government to create more jobs and food stalls soon flourished on literally every street corner.
The government stopped issuing new ‘big licenses’ in 1980s. They also limited the transfer of permits; no more passing on the next generation and even started buying back the licences. These days, there are only 25 ‘big licence stalls’ remaining in Hong Kong, of which half are here in Sham Shui Po.
The five stalls on Yiu Tung Street are very popular among local residents looking for cheap noodle soups, seafood and dim sum.Cheung Fat at #1 is particularly known for his noodle dishes. The most popular dish here is the thin egg noodles mixed with Cheung Fat’s house-blended sweet soy sauce 豉油撈麵(HK$35). The cuttlefish balls and fish balls in soup (HK$35) also come highly recommended.
