‘Bamboo Boundary’ dividing HK and China

Until the late 19th century this was the boundary between China and British Kowloon. High bamboo fences prevented smuggling between the colony and imperial China. In 1898 the bamboo boundary became obsolete when also the ‘New Territories’ was leased to the UK for 99 years.
Nice to know
It was this 99-year lease that expired in 1997 and prompted the handover of Hong Kong and surrounding islands to China. – Nice to know is that in theory, according to the treaty of Nanking, HK island had been leased to the British in perpetuity...
Look up and be surprised
At the junction of Boundary Street and Kei Lung Street, you will find a 7-storey green building with distinct Chinese architecture. It is the home of Lung Hing Tong, a community centre operated by a Taoist group.
