Run by the same family for generations, the locals come here for a drink after their shift, whether it is 11 in the morning or 11 at night

Neighbourhood bar

You wouldn’t expect it in this non-descript building, but on the first floor you find Pettah’s oldest arrack bar. Run by the same family for generations, this is where the locals come for a drink after their shift, whether it is 11 in the morning or 11 at night.

Try Sri Lanka’s signature spirit

A great place to try Sri Lankas’s famous local Old Arrack, made from the sap of unopened flowers from the coconut palm. It’s dark and strong. Anthony Bourdain described it as “a little sweet, not unlike a marriage of bourbon and rum, but with a stronger, burning kick and a mysterious bouquet.” At Hansagiri they charge Rs. 220 for a shot and Rs. 1550 for a bottle. Best enjoyed with a dash of EGB- Elephant House Ginger Beer, a staple chaser at any Sri Lankan gathering. A beer should cost you no more than Rs. 300.
