Wandering around in the village, you may think there is a temple behind every wall, but what you are looking at are ‘ordinary’ family compounds. Each of them exquisitely adorned with lavishly carved shrines. Nyuh Kuning has some exceptional examples of traditional housing known as karangs.

Balinese houses also features spiritual elements. For example, the high walls and small steep double entryways are designed to welcome visitors, but keep evil spirits out… as they are thought to only be able to travel in a straight line.
