There is no place like Chung Yeung Street to witness the cultural diversity of North Point. Migrants from Shanghai, Fujian and South East Asia all settled here and left their traces. The dry and wet goods stores along Chun Yeung Street are not found elsewhere in the city and people come from far just to shop here.

Watch the tram passing through

The best bit about Chun Yeung Street is the tram. Possibly the only place in the world where a tram drives through the middle of a wet market. As the tram diver cautiously navigates through the crowded market scene, the business continues as usual.

What’s in a name?

Kwok Chun Yeung was a Fujianese businessman named who travelled to Nanyang and became one of the ‘big four’ sugar merchants. When he came to Hong Kong in 1921, he bought land next to the North Point Power Plant to build a sugar factory. He made his real fortune when the price of sugar fell, and he redeveloped the factory land into real estate. He also owned property along Chun Yeung Street: the popular “40 buildings”.The name still reminds us of his contribution to the area.
