iSurprise God of the Sea

The god protecting the village

A bountiful harvest

Strolling through the small alleys of Coloane, every corner has its own beauty. Local artist Lee Cheng Yu painted the god of the sea playing with a shoal of fish at the seabed. The innumerable fish swimming in the river symbolise the bountiful harvest at all seasons, and represent the vivid image of Tam Kung, worshipped by the fishermen as their protector.

Many people say my work tends to be Chinese style, but I just created it by my own imagination.
— Lee Cheng Yu, muralist

Island spirit

Coloane was always an island and it is here the residents revere the water god the most. According to legend, Tam Kung had the magic power of calling the wind and rain, also curing diseases to save people.
