Lamma’s tribute to the goddess of the sea

Goddess of the sea

There are over 100 Tin Hau temples in Hong Kong and no fewer than three on the island. Dedicated to the Chinese goddess of the sea, mighty and powerful among the seafaring folk and ever popular among Lamma’s fishermen community. The Yung Shue Wan temple is unique in Hong Kong because of its ‘western’ lion statues. When it was renovated in the 1960’s - at the height of the cultural revolution in China – it was difficult to find Chinese sculptors to do the job, that’s why they were made by a local Lamma sculptor.
