Unique blend of Javanese Hindu and Islamic culture and architecture

Modern Islam

Masjid Perak or Silver Mosque is the second biggest mosque in Kotagede. A striking symbol of modern Islamic identity it is very different to its ‘big brother’ the Grand Mosque which was built in Javanese style with strong Hindu influences.

Silver mosque

Modern Islam grew very fast under the influence of the Muhammadiyah, a Yogyakarta-based reformation organisation. They built this mosque in 1937, supported by the many silver merchants in town, who also took care of the splendid silver decorations, hence the name: silver mosque.
