iSee Raden Ronggo

Scene of a mythical royal fight

Senopati’s fort

Here you see Raden Ronggo’s gate, the only original physical remains of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom. What you’re looking was the gate of the fort that Senopati built to protect his kingdom and the town. For those days it was a massive fort: a 400 by 400metre inner fort (cepuri) and outer fort (baluwarti) covering a site of 200 acres.

A mythical fight!

What makes this gate special? Notice the gaping hole! Legend has it that this was the scene of a mystical fight between Senopati and his mischievous son Raden Ronggo. After a heated argument, Senopati (blessed with supernatural powers) threw his son at his feet and broke his toes. Hurt and ashamed Raden left the Kingdom in a hurry. He never came back, leaving only the hole in the wall as evidence of his exit..

The only original physical remains of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom.
