This is how Denpasar got its name
Once upon a time, there was a king who created a beautiful garden under a banyan tree just north of the pasar (market): Den Pasar (north of the market).Years later in 1778, another king built a palace in the garden and made it the most important palace of the Badung Kingdom: Puri Denpasar.
Palace grounds burnt down
The grand palace burnt down at the eve of the 1906 battle between the three Badung Kingdoms and the Dutch colonial powers.The Dutch then used the grounds to build their administrative centre and since independence the house of the Governor of Bali stands there.
