One of the very few ‘sky-clad’ temples in the city, especially busy during Jain festivals.
- Anand Shankar Dhurav Rd, Khadia
At first sight, this small temple at the street corner reveals little about its glorious past and significance to the local community. Only when you look closer you see the beautifully carved arches and sculptures, setting it apart from the other buildings in the street. Each of the stone sculptures tells a story from the Jain scriptures...stories of divine intervention!
Jainism is an ancient religion teaching spiritual purity and peaceful coexistence of the universe. The Digambara sect is one of the two Jain schools of thought. Meaning ‘sky clad’, it refers to the traditional practice of neither wearing nor possessing any clothes, and being sheltered by the cosmos. The old city of Ahmedabad is home to only few Digambar Jain temples, and this one in Khadia is very popular.
