Humble beginnings
When looking at the 88-metre-tall minarets it may be hard to imagine that the city’s prime place of worship started out in 1812 as a small bamboo shed with a pond in the middle.
A majestic masjid
At the occasion of the Asia-Afrika conference in 1955, Sukarno ordered a major renovation in Arabic style, adding a domed roof and minarets. The last renovation in 2003 gave the mosque its current modern look, inspired by the Nabawi Mosque in Medina.

Wondering what the view is like from above? If you are here on a Monday or Saturday, you’re lucky. You can take an elevator all the way up to the top of the Southern minaret.
