iSurprise Cell No.5

Banceuy prison where Sukarno spent his nights in jail

Famous prisoner

This guard tower is the last remaining part of Bandung's notorious Banceuy prison built by the Dutch in 1871.

You can read Sukarno’s famous and courageous defence statement which he wrote right here, in the pitch-dark cell.

Here, freedom fighter Sukarno -who later became Indonesia’s first president- was detained by the Dutch colonial government in 1930 after criticising colonialism and imperialism through his political speeches.
