Walking on water to find the old city wall

An impressive piece of military architecture with 23 fortifications, but it was never put to the test to defend the city

Stone warehouses

Behind the museum are some massive 16th century stone warehouses. Here the VOC kept valuable stock of cloves, nutmegs and other spices.

Old city wall

Between the Maritime Museum and the river you find a pile of crumbled stones. This is all that is left from Batavia’s original fort, once an impressive piece of military architecture with 23 fortifications.

The big fire

In January 2018 a fire broke out, a fatal incident that destroyed almost a third of the warehouses. Much of the damage has been repaired but the Western warehouses are still off-limit.
