This is a historic place, here along the muddy coast of the Hindu Kingdom of Sunda, the locals started trading with the Chinese, Indians and Europeans and became the most important trading port for pepper and other spices in the whole of South East Asia.
‘Revitalisation’
Walking amidst the rubble, it is hard to picture this area as the once lively Kampung Pasar Ikan, (fish market village) a largely Muslim fisherman community.
The kampung was demolished in April 2016 to make way for a large-scale ‘marine tourism project, but years after the clearing, the area sadly remains choked in rubble.
Unexpected discovery
During the revitalisation, the engineers discovered part of Batavia’s original city wall submerged two meters under the river’s surface.
