Historical mosque

This is one of Jakarta’s oldest mosques. A sacred space, because it is where you can find the tomb of Habib Husein, a direct descendant of the prophet, who migrated from India to Batavia at the age of 20 to start preaching Islam.

Myths and legends

The mosque is a place of local legends. When Habib Husein passed away, they were ready to bury him on the Batavia mainland, but his body mysteriously went missing from the coffin, only to reappear here at the island. This is why this became his final resting place. Luar Batang is Betawi dialect for a body (batang) outside (luar) the coffin.
