Stories of resilience

Luar Batang still has that island feeling to it - a distinctly different character

Waiting for the beam

The name Luar Batang means ‘outside the beam’. In those days Sunda Kelapa harbour was blocked with a long wooden beam: batang in local dialect. Their boats were inspected before the beam would be lifted to let them through. Sometimes they had to wait for days.

Island feeling

Back in the days, high tide water turned the kampung into an isolated village. Luar Batang still has that island feeling to it - a distinctly different character.

The rubble ferry

The bridge between the two kampungs was destroyed in 2016 as part of the redevelopment plan. Mr. Achmad - owner of local laundry shop - built a ferry out of the rubble to reconnect the two villlages. Pak Suarto who used to sell seashell crafts at Pasar Ikan says: “I had to pack up my life when the shops were destroyed, now I’ve opened a new shop here”.
