Contemporary art
Managed by New Zealander Gill Pattison, River Gallery is the leading art space in the country, giving visitors the chance to view an unrivalled range of the best contemporary art that Myanmar has to offer. With over 30 leading and emerging artists represented, River Gallery provides a great selection of the many different styles and techniques used by Myanmar artists.
What’s in a name
“I called the gallery ‘River’, not only because of its location beside the Yangon River, but also because I liked the notion of the artists’ creations flowing out of the country to be seen and enjoyed by people from all around the world” says Gill Pattison, founder of the gallery.
Our favourite artists
We like Pyayt Phyo Aung (PPA) who reinterpreted a distinct Myanmar feature in an eye-catching series of ‘Thanaka’ paintings. His series is also available as a set of coasters that makes for a wonderful souvenir. Another favourite is Arker Kyaw, the 19-year-old Arker Kyaw became famous overnight when he painted a mural to welcome Barack Obama to Myanmar and Zaw Win Pe, aself-taught artist shot to fame with his colourful paintings featuring the rolling hills of the northern Shan state.
