Charming stone slab street with a costume market

Pottinger Street was laid with thick slabs of locally-quarried granite that made it easier for coolies (Chinese laborers) to carry goods uphill.

Stone slabs

Known in Chinese as Stone Slabs Street 石板街, Pottinger Street was laid with thick slabs of locally-quarried granite that made it easier for coolies (Chinese laborers) to carry goods uphill.

Costume market

The slow pace of pedestrians heading uphill made Pottinger an ideal street for hawkers. Market stalls now line the street, most of them selling seasonal costumes and decoration for festivals like Chinese New Year, Halloween and Christmas.

Art rise

H Queen’s, which opens in late 2017 at the corner of Pottinger Street and Queen’s Road, is Hong Kong’s first high-rise building designed exclusively for renowned art galleries and auction houses including the likes of David Zwirner, Whitestone, Pearl Lam and Tang Contemporary Art.
