Charcoal is used for cooking at home and in the market. The charcoal sold here is sourced from Myiek (larger pieces) and Rhakine (smaller pieces). Charcoal is sold for as little as 700 kyat per viss (1.6kg).


Nice to know

Charcoal in Myanmar is usually sourced from mangrove wood. In parts of Myanmar, this has led to stands of mangroves being destroyed. Recently NGO programs, which specialise in mangrove regeneration, have started in the Rakhine and Delta regions.
