Oasis of art

This tree lined street opposite the Viharamahadevi park is an oasis of art almost 100 where amateur artists and art students display their work. Best to come on the weekends, often there are festivals in the park with local food and music here and it gives you a chance to talk to the artists. One of the Green Path artists is Thejana Roshan Kumara. Him and his friends prefer the term ‘Open Air gallery’. He shares: “Everyone knows Green Path is famous for its art. This neighbourhood is packed with art and culture – there is the University of Arts nearby, the Colombo Art Gallery to one side, and the Nelum Pokuna theatre on the top of the road. It’s also centrally located. This is the perfect spot, and it’s been this way for 15 years”.

What to buy?

The art ranges from local landscapes and scenes depicting Lankan wildlife, to fishermen, Buddhist statues and more abstract forms of art. Expect to pay Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 10,000 apiece - the Green Path standard, but prices are negotiable and they’re happy to roll up your purchase for easy transport. Keen to see more art? Go to the National Art Gallery just down the road. One of the long rectangular halls is exclusive for the work of young local art-students
