Historic sports club
Colombo Gymkhana is Colombo’s oldest club, founded more than 150 years ago in 1863 at the Galle Face Green.
It later moved to Cinnamon Gardens but remains the city’s home for the sports, swimming, horse-riding, hockey rugby, football, tennis and of course cricket. The Gymkhana teams compete in the country’s premier division and the clubhouse is more than just post-match cricket banter, it’s always been a popular social hangout for the city’s elite. The club has gone a long way from its humble beginnings at Galle Face Green, now boosting state of the art gym facilities and a chic club, Sugar 41 at the top floor.
Chill bar
Until 1964, the social club was exclusive to Europeans. Luckily, that rule has long gone. Visit the stunning rooftop bar for hand crafted cocktails and a relaxed vibe. Sugar also boosts the best selections of wines anywhere in Colombo. Best time to come is for sunset happy hour (5-7pm), you may just catch a cricket match.
