Local Halal Chinese favourites

Meng Chai Kopitiam

For over 50 years Meng Chai Kopitiam is known for their tender sliced halal beef served with noodles cooked (starting from RM 5.00). Mr Fu, the third-generation owner says, “This comforting soup is made from fresh cow bones and meat. Recipes are handed down from father to son. The devotion to fresh ingredients is the key to our success.” If beef soup noodle is not your thing, try kaya toast with sweet creamy kaya to paired perfectly with a kopi-o (RM 1.80). Toast with sweet creamy condensed milk may sound odd, but it is surprisingly good.

Luan Fong Restaurant

Next to Meng Chai, is Luan Fong Restaurant which does a good Sup Lembu Hailam (Hailam-style Beef Soup). This is a Hainanse version of beef noodles adjusted. The Hainanese chef employed under the British government adapted the recipe for the hot and humid weather in Malaysia.Find Luan Fong at 1, Lorong Bagan Luar 3.

Sin Bee Chew

Opened in 1945, Sin Bee Chew is now run by the third generation Leng sisters, Yeat Phing and Guat Eng. Very popular among local Muslims as they source their ingredients locally from halal-certified suppliers. Must-try here is Hailam beehoon, flavoured with thick soy and oyster sauce and served with sliced vegetables. We also love the Hainan chicken chop and ikan tiga rasa, fried fish dish topped with a sweet, sour and spicy sauce. Find Sin Bee Chew at 11A Lorong Bagan Luar 3.
