iSurprise Butterworth Art Walk

Back street alley with local history inspired murals

Historical street art

This is not just random graffiti, but a curated collection of street-art narrating Butterworth’s history and evolution from fishing village to an industrial hub. A collaboration between Think City and local architect Zaini Zainul, local artists were hand-picked to produce the murals. The once smelly backside alley has now been transformed into highly instagrammable outdoor gallery that is very popular among the local community.

Our favourites

We like how the murals depict Butterworth’s humble beginnings, going back to the days when sugar cane was the main cash crop around here: paintings of sugarcane plants, carrying baskets and a stall selling sugarcane juice. But our favourite must be the colourful elephants carrying the crop across the plantations.
