Changing faces

Mandvi street in Shri Nagji Bhudar Ni Pol is one of the oldest pols in the Manek Chowk area. Because it’s so close to the market, it has seen a rapid transformation from a quiet residential area to a commercial hub.

Memories of place

In 2012 the local Jain community celebrated the centenary completion of 400 years of the Jain temple. The festivities brought back many of the original residents of the neighbourhood. Yash Shah, who has now moved to the western part of Ahmedabad has fond memories of growing up in the pol: “I remember the late night strolls through Manek Chowk and celebrating all festivals together. We, the residents of the pol were part of one big family. This is a feeling you will not get in any other part of the city! We celebrated life and mourned death, together. Unfortunately now, the city has changed and so has our pol. We have had to shift out for business and better schooling for children, but coming back to this place always feels warm and welcoming.“
