iEat Manek Chowk

The street food bazaar that never sleeps, the heart and soul of the old city

By night the true spirit of this place comes to life; around 8pm the square becomes a big bustling street food market open until the wee hours, just before the cows come to feed.

Bustling street-food bazaar

This popular square is a must-visit when in Ahmedabad. To truly appreciate its character, you must visit at different times of the day. In the early morning, Manek Chowk is a place to feed the holy cows, in the afternoon it is lined with vendors selling fresh vegetable and fruit produce. But it is at night that the true spirit of this place comes to life; around 8pm the square becomes a big bustling street food market open until the wee hours, just before the cows come to feed. It is ever popular among the locals, just like it was in the days when Ahmedabad was known as the ‘Manchester of India’ and was a prime location for textile mills. This is where the factory workers flocked for cheap eats after their late shifts.

Make sure to leave space for dessert. Asharfilal ki kulfi.....try the whole spectrum of eccentric flavors - rose coconut, pinacolada, rabri pista or paan gulkand.
